how it all began
There is a line in that post: "The more you do something, the better you do it"
WHOA! I had never seen anything like this! Those beautiful layouts, the rich colours, my mind was a flood with ideas! (no, not because I was staring at a bunch.....ok, maybe a little). I couldn't possibly mar my buddy, my sketchbook though, could I, NO! So I bought a smaller one just for this purpose. I have decided to use quotes for my inspiration on these. Sometimes the art comes first, sometimes the quote but it all seems to work and is quite satisfying. and so it grewNext came a journal, well because you can't possibly just journal in your sketchbook or your sketchbook journal (even though the latter implies that). Then a graph notebook, for perspective drawing, logo ideas, geometry play, lettering etc. Sketchbooks and lined notebooks aren't the same you know. THEN, I have all of these ideas in my head and putting them in Google Keep or my phones' memo app just leaves them there. When I'm creating I turn my phone off and put it away and when do I get most of my ideas? While I'm creating something else, so I needed a notebook for that..... I think this step is called negotiating. Now, it's not about the brand (or quality of the brand) that entices me. It's the use. Like I said in the beginning, it's about having a little control and order. And boy do they ever ALL get used. Not all at once and certainly not every day, although I wish I could, but at least two a day. I also reflect on them all at least four times a week. Go back through them, not to edit, to reflect. It's therapy for me, it's purging, it's emotional control, it's me. My SOUL is in every one of these books. acceptanceSo there you have it, I've admitted it, I have a note/sketchbook addiction. Really. I'm already planning on getting at least two more. I think I might use my idea book for art ideas and the new one for blog/writing ideas AND I must get a pocket water colour journal for travelling (and a travel watercolour set, teehee). I might go and try the infamous Moleskin for this (not endorsed). I've read so much about them and watercolour paint and regular paper just has disaster written all over it. My collection: (so far)
How about you? Do you keep journals, notebooks, or sketchbooks?
