Most of us have heard the term, used the term and believed that we have them. I am here to tell you that I don’t BELIEVE you should have ANY “guilty pleasures”. I think you should erase this phrase from your vocabulary. You see, when you associate the word guilt, with anything you
do or see, it implies a negative correspondence to the activity. Why would anyone want to do that to something they enjoy doing? Say, for instance, that you have associated the latest pop song from the Teen-Heartthrob-of-the-Month to a “so called” Guilty Pleasure. Meaning, you love it , sing it out loud, know ALL the words, dance like nobody's watching while you listen and genuinely can’t wipe the smile from your face when it’s on. HOWEVER, it is widely believed by your peers that “Only Tweens listen to that!” or “You’re a guy, that’s a girly song!”
OWN IT!! It’s your FAVORITE SONG!! There shouldn’t be any guilt attached to it EVER!! The two statements are contradictory. You cannot truly enjoy something if you feel guilty of liking it! You are basically telling yourself that you are wrong for doing so!!! You aren’t! Love that new Biebs song? Rock it! Cry whenever you watch Bambi? Bring on the tissues! That ‘abstract art” piece you just bought that no one understands? Hang it in your living room! Knitted poncho your favorite wearable? Put it on and STRUT!! The point is you can’t truly be happy unless you are comfortable in your own skin and part of that is not feeling guilty about enjoying the things that make you, well you! Don’t get me wrong, guilt does in-fact have a very good roll in society, when properly placed, but when attached to something as petty as a song, movie, fashion item etc., it can have a negative impact on our overall happiness that should be attached to that song, movie, shirt, candy. David Grohl of the Foo Fighters said it perfectly during a Podcast with WTF podcast and Nerdist Podcast (CAUTION: David uses explicit language a bit during this!!) The whole Podcast is great but his stance on Guilty Pleasures starts at 5:50 “That whole Guilty Pleasure thing is like, full of #%$^in $h!t”
So that’s my spin on the whole subject of Guilty Pleasures. Excuse me while I go listen to Kool & the Gang! (yes, I do)
